Canada Greener Homes Loan

To encourage Canadians to make their homes more energy efficient, the Canada Greener Homes Loan provides interest-free financial assistance. This way, homeowners can improve the energy performance of their homes while reducing their environmental footprint. This loan is compatible with every provincial programs aimed at improving household energy efficiency.

Maximum: $40,000
Minimum: $5,000
Terms of repayment: 10 years, interest free
Type of loan: Unsecured personal loan, on approved credit

The maximum eligible loan amount is determined based on the renovations selected in your application, as well as the estimates for those renovations. The eligible amount is capped in accordance with industry and market standards. The maximum loan amount may be less than the estimated cost of the work, in which case you will be responsible for financing the difference.

Only one loan may be granted per eligible property and per owner-occupant.

It is important to note that this loan can only finance products and installations that are recommended by an energy advisor and that are eligible for the grant. This way, you can be sure that the renovations financed by the loan will contribute to improving the energy efficiency of your home and still be eligible for the grant.

Who can benefit?

There are some eligibility requirements to meet before applying for the loan:

  • You must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or non-permanent resident who is legally authorized to work in Canada
  • You must own the home and it must be your primary residence
  • You have a pre-retrofit evaluation and have not yet had a post-retrofit evaluation
  • Your pre-retrofit evaluation was completed on or after April 1, 2020
  • You have not started the retrofits for which you are seeking a loan
  • You have a good credit history and are not in:
    • a consumer proposal
    • an orderly payment of debt program
    • a bankruptcy or equivalent insolvency proceeding
